Jack Johnson, Portishead, Roger Waters headline Coachella

After months speculation, the official Coachella lineup was announced yesterday in Mexico City. That wonderful rumor (pipe dream?) about a My Bloody Valentine set was just that. Don’t get me wrong. There are some decent bands on the roster. You can’t deny that bands like the Verve and Spiritualized in the desert at night have the potential to be mind blowing. Not to mention Roger Waters doing Dark Side of the Moon. But there are some acts listed here that produce little more than a sigh. And of course a big head scratcher is Jack Johnson headlining the first night.

Coachella also announced that there will be an East Coast festival this summer, which is dubbed the All Points West Music and Arts Festival. It will be held August 8, 9 and 10, at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. A lineup will be announced in the near future.

this would have been my 3rd year in a row going to wonderful coachella, but with the overall lineup lack of bands "that you would think would be there" with a few exceptions of course but a big disappointment in th end, not worth the 6 hour drive and then you add to that that they raised ticket prices and have that insult of a headliner jack j.? its a sad day.

Victor

I don't know about you, but there are plenty of good bands on each day. Here's my list for each day:
Friday:
The Verve, Fatboy Slim, Madness, The National, Animal Collective, Slightly Stoopid, Battles, Aesop Rock, Minus the Bear, Jens Lekman, John Butler Trio, Black Lips, Datarock, Reverend and the Makers.
Saturday:
M.I.A., Hot Chip, Cold War Kids, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Turbonegro, Jamie T, VHS or Beta, Carbon/silicon, Bonde Do Role, St. Vincent, Akron Family, New Young Pony Club.
Sunday:
Roger Waters (“Dark Side of the Moon”), My Morning Jacket, Spiritualized, Justice, Gogol Bordello, The Streets, Simian Mobile Disco, The Field, Les Savy Fav, The Cool Kids, Black Kids, Black Mountain, The Annuals, Shout Out Louds, Plastiscines, Brett Dennen

Matt

there definitely bands i'd check out but i think people are a bit disappointed in the headliners.

Daba is right. Compared to any other year, 2008's headliners are a drag.

there are certainly a few bands that i would like to see but at least for me and my friends after being 100 % sure of going it's impossible to justify the 12 hour round trip drive from the bay area and the considerable expenses that go with it with this lineup nevermind the headliners and the insult of a headliner that j.j. is, there is just so much missing imo that many of us were hoping for, radiohead, pj harvey, m83, mogwai, love is all, under byen, yyy's, nick cave, ladytron and so on, I hope that people there have fun but our coachella tradition as come to a sad end.

victor

Yeah, you just knew they'd be hard pressed to follow up last years headliners. This isnt worth flying to Cali for. I'll wait for the show in jersey... although I will miss the cali girls in hot shorts and bikini tops... oh and the $7 lemonade.

Jack Johnson is headlining? That's surprising. There ARE a number of interesting bands (esp on Friday, in my opinion), but i'm thinking there's not enough Bang (with a capital

Amy

A lot of the good non-headlining bands are repeats from previous Coachellas. Given that I'm hovering dangerously close to apathy when it comes to most of the indie rock and dance bands that've emerged in the last couple years, there's really not much to get excited about for me.

Maryland Deathfest it is! Monstrosity WOOOOOOOOHAAAAAA!!!!
