Five years after his death, it is testament to J Dilla’s talent that even after four posthumous albums enough material is still emerging from the producer’s vaults to warrant a fifth. Today his official website has released the cover art and the trailer for the new record, Rebirth Of Detroit. The album’s 25 tracks will pair unheard Dilla beats with newly recorded lyrics from a host of artists affiliated with Motor City that includes Danny Brown, Amp Fiddler, Illa J, Frank Nitt, Chuck Inglish, Phat Kat, and Guilty Simpson.
Dilla’s mother, Maureen “MaDukes” Yancey, has also issued a statement that goes into greater depth about the record and its relationship to Detroit:
This will bring together artists that have drifted away from one another and haven’t been able to work with each other lately. It’s a healing process for the city. For individuals, it’s going to bring back the love and the passion for the music and for what hip-hop has to offer.
