J Dilla’s Record Collection For Sale

The late great J Dilla’s record collection is for sale at a Detroit-area record store UHF. Read that again. UHF employee Jeff Bubeck claims he found an enormous store of between 7,000 and 8,000 records in an abandoned storage unit, and upon further investigation, discovered Mr. Yancey’s signature on several of them. Dilla’s record collection was legendary; the Detroit-based producer’s music was sample-based, but famously hard to place, both because of his distinctive sampling style and the extent of his collection. Along with this trove of records are pieces of junk mail addressed to James Yancey and tapes mysteriously labelled “Jaydee Beats.” Could there be a wealth of unreleased material among these records? Get down to UHF in Royal Oak, Michigan and find out for yourself. [DS]
