According to Spinner, the folks behind HBO's The Wire (aka the best television show of all time*) have optioned Steve Knopper's Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age, a music industry tell-all that starts with the Disco Sucks night and ends with the digital age eating away profits, with the presumed intention of turning it into an HBO project. Playwright Victoria Stewart is already attached as the head writer, and Knopper himself is trying to get some musicians involved in the creation of the adaptation.
Yes it is up for debate. While The Wire is good, it just felt like people wanted something HBO-related to latch onto after The Sopranos ended. Meanwhile, one of the best shows that station had was completely overlooked: OZ.
1. Don't forget Oz had Chris Meloni, which was good. But still, not as good as the Wire. 2. Also, the Wire hardly ever aired in a way that would make it "easy to latch" onto, since it started airing its final episode like 8 months after the Sopranos went off. HBO wanted John from Cincinnati to take over the Sopranos, but that show sucked. Hard. 3. "Where's Wallace, String?" 4. The Wire never got the kind of funding that any of the other shows on HBO get. I heard Entourage's cast budget for each episode is higher than the entire operating costs for each episode of the Wire, which makes it remarkable they were able to accomplish what they were. 5. "Indeed" 6. Sheeeeeeeeeit.
Deadwood is right up there with The Wire. Might have stuck around and got better if HBO had decided to keep funding the damn thing. Instead, that John from WKRP garbage.
