Rumors are popping up across Mac blogs that iTunes will be introducing a subscription service as early as September, which allow those willing to pay $129 a year to have access to half of the iTunes store by launch time. Instead of purchasing the songs, the subscribers will essentially “rent” the songs until they don’t pay the fee anymore.
This is roughly the third year in a row such a service has been mentioned in relation to iTunes, and nothing came of the rumors then, so it remains to be seen if this will happen. As long as Apple still allows customers to buy songs individually for 99 cents, the service could take off for those who would otherwise purchase a lot of songs individually. [CNet]
I don't think this is happening. This would hurt them financially in the long-run it seems.
"Rent the song..." is an awful awful idea. That's why I wouldnt go with Napster.
For the consumer, eMusic is the best deal, but they really need some majors to get onboard to be a serious threat to iTunes.
I agree, noise redux. I don't want to lose the songs if I quit the service. I also agree about eMusic -- there's just so much that they don't offer.
I still get a lot from eMusic. I think the price is good. I only splurge on major label shiz that I "have to have."
