iTunes Genius receiving mixed reviews from some puzzled users

Genius, the biggest addition to Apple’s latest version of iTunes, is receiving mixed reviews from users. Genius breaks down into two basic parts: a playlist creator that compiles tunes from a user’s collection and a recommendation component, which suggests items for purchase from the iTunes store. Some early adopters have been happy with the playlist creator, but found the recommendation software lacking. One poster lamented inputting “Man of Constant Sorrow” and having “Gonna Fly Now” and “America, Fuck Yeah” returned as possible purchases, while another failed to see any connection between Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and the music of Dragonforce. While neither recommendation is exactly perfect, it’s easy to see where Genius was coming from with the choices. Users expecting a computer program to read their minds will be disappointed; that the program got two other popular songs from movies and made the leap between the guitar bands is pretty impressive. Genius will probably never be the best way to find new music, but even in its early form there are many features about which to be excited. As a Mac zombie, my personal recommendation for Genius is to start with more popular songs in the library for the best immediate results, and then move on to more obscure tracks. [Coolfer]
