iTunes celebrates sixth birthday, faces new challenges
Apple’s iTunes music player has become so omnipresent, it’s hard to believe that the program is only celebrating its sixth birthday. During that time, a full-scale revolution has taken place, with iTunes now responsible for seventy percent of the current music download market. According to some predictions, the download service will account for twenty-five percent of the overall music market by 2012. Even with this astonishing amount of success, iTunes is not in a position to rest on its laurels. The second five years of the program will be measured by how well Apple is able to fend off challenges from the likes of Amazon’s DRM-free music store, social networking sites, and applications that have yet to be imagined. In addition, Apple must contend with the fact that, despite the success of iTunes, eighty-five percent of music is still sold in physical formats. In order to maintain growth, the company must convince a new group of users to buy music online and increase their product’s compatibility with home and car stereos. Congratulations on five epic years, iTunes; now get back to work. [Hypebot]
