When we reported on Islands’ new album, we only knew that frontman Nick Thorburn and company were looking to drop the then-untitled project in early 2012. But now, we’ve learned that the record, which is their fourth, is called A Sleep & A Forgetting. Also, it’s scheduled for a Feb. 14, 2012 release via Anti- Records. Yes, all you lovers and haters, it’s coming out Valentine’s Day, a fact that Thorburn was well aware of while making the album:
“This album is far more personal than any I’ve made before,” he said in a press release. “I left New York after the end of a relationship and came to Los Angeles. There was a piano where I was staying and that’s where I wrote these songs. This record deals with loss, with memory and forgetting and with dreaming. I started writing it on Valentine’s Day and it’s coming out on Valentine’s Day.”
Thorburn also revealed that the 11 tracks of A Sleep & A Forgetting are equally influenced by soul and folk music. He apparently spent hours listening to Smokey Robinson and the Temptations along with Sibylle Baier, Maddy Prior, and June Tabor. The end result is something Thorbun compared to the work of Harry Nilsson and Roy Orbison. Anyone looking to get a sampling of the album should make sure to see Islands this Friday, Oct. 28 at the Dominion Theater and Lounge in Manhattan, N.Y. Tickets are available here.
