Is the slightly risque cover of Kanye West's forthcoming album, My Dark Twisted Fantasy, being banned? Or is West just complaining about it on Twitter to try and drum up some controversy before its Nov. 22 release date?
According to both the New Musical Express and Rap-Up.com, the cover illustration by George Condo has someone in charge up in arms. He recently Tweeted: "So Nirvana can have a naked human being on their cover but I can't have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings."
So what gives? It's not entirely clear, but it seems the record companies West is afiliated with -- Def Jam and Rock-A-Fella -- don't want to risk the mega-store Wal-Mart not carrying the release, which would harm sales. West Tweeted that he was undeterred by that: "I wanna sell albums but not at the expense of my true creativity."
Over at the LA Times' Pop & Hiss blog, Todd Martens spoke to a high-ranking anonymous source who said the label wasn't pressuring West to change the cover, just really strongly suggesting it. More news about this is sure to unfold in the coming weeks so stay tuned.
Like the homie Craig Jenkins said (I think), this is highly reminiscent of prog-rock covers from the '70s...which isn't surprising considering Yeezy sampled, among others I'm sure, King Crimson...though the sampled track did drop in 1969 technically. OK, I'm done here.
Haha I said it looked like a grossly overblown European prog concept album, but in a good way. Kanye's delightfully off the deep end if he thinks this compares to the cover of Nevermind, though. Nevermind had a naked baby. This one's got drinking and interspecies coitus. Hopefully he'll just wrap a paper sleeve around it and leave it as is.
Yeah, baby dong does not equal that^
I was wondering what was the reason this particular sketch was chosen for the cover?

Mr. West should just open up his own pr firm.
He does. It's called "Kanye West's Twitter."
Huh. Def. catching the '70-s prog vibe. It's a really ugly cover after you get past the whole "banned" conversation.
