Conflicting reports are emerging about Joaquin Phoenix’s rap career. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the whole thing is a hoax cooked up between Phoenix and his buddy Cassey Affleck, who is supposed to be shooting a documentary about the venture. The ever-unreliable “source who is really close to the actor” has told EW: "He said, 'It's a put-on. I'm going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it.'”
Is Phoenix conducting a Spinal Tap-esque experiment for laughs with his Hollywood buddies? "It's an art project for him," says the source, appearing to confirm that it’s all a hoax. "He's going full out. He probably has told his reps that he's quit acting. Joaquin is very smart. This is very conscious. He has a huge degree of control."
However, Phoenix’s representative Susan Patricola has got other ideas. "The transition from one career to another is never seamless,” she says. “He intends on exploring his musical interests despite speculative, negative or positive reactions.” Hmm. Phoenix is no doubt delighted at all this misinformation floating around, which may well be an integral part of his “art project.” One thing’s for sure: he really needs to lose that beard.
