Indies Win More Than Half of 2009 Grammys; Jonny Greenwood Is Nonplussed

Sunday's Grammys provided more than just a place for blink-182 to kick off their reunion: they also marked a triumph for independent musicians and labels. Of the 110 statuettes distributed, 56 — a little over half — were awarded to indie musicians, compared to last year's 36. Top awards went to Alison Krauss and Robert Plant (Best Album and Best Record) and Chick Corea (Jazz Instrumental).

Despite sharing the Alternative Music Album prize with his Radiohead bandmates, though, Jonny Greenwood was skeptical (or maybe cynical) about what the ceremony meant to him. "I'm a little confused," he told the AP, "because whenever I watch The Simpsons, they're very rude about the Grammys. It's hard to know how important they are!"  [Hypebot]

I'm confused, too, but not in an ironic way: does anybody watch the Grammies? And does anyone actually care?
