At a conference in Iceland today, Jane Dyball, a representative from Radiohead’s publishing firm Warner Chappell, revealed the sales stats for Radiohead’s supposed sales paradigm shifter, In Rainbows.
According to Dyball, In Rainbows, to date, has moved more than 3 million units, across box-sets, physical CD sales, and downloads via iTunes and the band’s website. The physical CD itself has moved 1.75 million since its release in January. Dyball would not release how much the average download price was via the band’s website, but she did say that Warner Chappell was closely monitoring the average price with the intention of shutting it down if the price got below a pre-determined figure. So, apparently Radiohead weren’t sure they wanted to offer fans downloads if they weren’t going to pay for them. Dyball also asserted that the times the album was downloaded illegally via torrent sites probably dwarfed the digital sales via the band’s site and iTunes.
But to the nuts and bolts: based on the sales of In Rainbows through their website, Radiohead made more money than they did behind the major label-supported Hail to the Thief, which is probably good news to everyone involved. [Stereogum]

The ironic thing is that the illegal AC/DC downloads will probably surpass that number in the next couple of weeks...
