The video for the Teddybears' "Punkrocker" featuring Iggy Pop was just released on the Internet. You may have also noticed this song on a recent Cadillac commercial that has been airing a good deal. Thoughts?

This is a great quote... I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dilettantes and, uh... and, uh... heartless manipulators, about music... that takes up the energies, and the bodies, and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds, of young men, who give what they have to it, and give everything they have to it. And it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt; it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism, and, everything that's rotten about rock 'n' roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten... but I'm sure, I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise... is in fact... the brilliant music of a genius... myself. And that music is so powerful, that it's quite beyond my control. And, ah... when I'm in the grips of it, I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever, have you ever felt like that? When you just, when you just, you couldn't feel anything, and you didn't want to either. You know, like that? Do you understand what I'm saying, sir?

What year was this? In the beginning he sounds like he just watched 'Don't Look Back.' Excellent quote, and very pertinent.

Interesting vid. I'd gotten a sort of cynical feel from the song just hearing it on the radio, but the video clinches it - it seems to me that it's very deliberately implying some less-than-complimentary things about the rock scene, and society in general. Maybe Iggy Pop's getting bitter about his generation?I really like the 80's style cars and the night-traffic effect - I've seen several people complaining about how "overdone" it was in 1985 but I get the feeling that's kind of the point. It serves as an interesting counterpoint to the surrealism of the identically-teddy-bear-headed people (a comment on conformity, perhaps?). Definitely a thought-provoking piece of work for anyone who's studied societal trends, especially in music.

Good use of Iggy, asking the question" I'm a punkrocker, yes I am?" Like the rest of us old punks, he seems suprised to be alive. Nice and dark, good images. Still a little p.o'ed. Great!

I think that the statement that is made in this video is that in the entire history of punk there have always been political, social, and economic statements as well as protests in the very heart of the music. "Punkrockers" said things the way they were. If they thought you were a facist they said so, if they thought the government sucked they said so in their music and punk has its oun beat. lysten to the lyrics with that in mind.
