Idolator announced today that it will attempt to fill the Grand Canyon-sized void left by the Village Voice'''s venerable ''"Pazz and Jop''" poll, which suffered an untimely death earlier this year when Robert Christgau was axed by the alt-weekly. After rightfully acknowledging the tallness of this task, they reveal the specifics and aims of the inaugural Idolator Jackin' Pop Critics Poll.
Edited by Michaelangelo Matos--a Seattle-based music critic and author of the 33 1/3 book Sign O' The Times--Jackin' Pop will maintain the Voice's thoughtfully anarchic approach to music criticism, merging it with the technological reach of Gawker Media. In the coming week, more than 1,200 critics, writers and editors will be sent ballots, and results will be announced Sunday, Dec. 31st.
So who are these mysterious "1,200 critics, writers and editors?" That's where you (possibly) come in. According to Matos, Jackin' Pop is open to submissions from ''"people who write regularly about music in print, for broadcast, or on the web." In other words, although they've got a few people in mind, they need more voters. It may just be time to dust off those coterie ''"Top Ten Records of 2006''" lists and get emailing.
