New Ida album on the way in January

Artists leaving the big city behind to find new inspiration deep in the woods is a classic American story. When New York City-based band Ida followed this path recently, it found a lot more than just a new outlook on its music.[more:] For one, it found legendary Band drummer Levon Helm. Ida crafted much of the new album, Lovers Prayers, in Helm’s home studio in the Catskills near Woodstock. Helm also invited Ida to play some of the Midnight Ramble concerts he hosts there on Saturday nights, once even sitting in on drums with the band. Although Helm didn’t actually make it onto the album, plenty of other collaborators did. These include violinist Jean Cook from the Mekons, cellist Jane Scarpantoni (who has played with R.E.M. and Lou Reed), outsider folkie Michael Hurley, and Tara Jane O’Neil. Lovers Prayers is slated for a January 29 release via Polyvinyl.
