Ian MacKaye and Company Take Offense to Forever 21 T-shirt Rip-Off

I've never really even heard of Forever 21 (apparently it's a clothing store for teenagers), but apparently the company has been caught selling the shirt to your left, which features a Minor Threat logo. Minor Threat are not ones for selling out to t-shirt companies, so a few blogs sent word of the shirt to MacKaye's Dischord, and predictably, they're not so happy about it.

"The band and the label tend to deal with bootleg shirts on a case by case basis, acknowledging the vast difference between kids screening shirts for friends and professional printing studios screening shirts for profit. Obviously this absurd Forever 21 shirt falls under the ‘unacceptable' category."

That's good, because this shirt is pretty ass-ugly. Plus I can't honestly see a whole lot of tweens going into Forever 21 and thinking, "OMG, a Minor Threat t-shirt! That band is like my favorite along with the Jonas Brothers." I could understand if they were selling this shirt at Hot Topic, but not at Forever 21, which would seem to indicate that this is pretty blatant copyright infringement. [Daily Swarm via Idolator

Minor Threat

This is hardly new. Nike lifted the cover of Out of Step without even asking and switched the name to Major Threat for a skateboarding campaign. And let's not forget the angelic Cobain/Strummer/Vicious/Ramone Doc Martens ad campaign.

It's interesting how much knockoff merchandise has emerged for Minor Threat/Fugazi due to their strictly no merchandise platform. I'm sure there's a lesson in economics to be found there.
