How Alan Lomax Got Credited On Jay-Z's "The Takeover"

In case you're not familiar, or haven't read one of 1700 stories about him in Rolling Stone, Alan Lomax was an important person in the commercialization of blues, heading down to the Mississippi Delta to record great blues legends in their home environments, and chroniciling early American music. So how does dude have a credit on Jay-Z's "The Takeover"?

A blogger named Ethan Hein has discovered an interesting wrinkle in the credits to Jay-Z's Nas diss track, namely that Lomax gets credited thanks to a winding sampling history. Basically: Lomax owns the publishing rights for a song called "Rosie," which was reworked into a song by the Animals, which was covered by Grand Funk Railroad, which was sampled by KRS-One, which was sampled in "The Takeover." It's an incredibly interesting thing to consider, and you can read Hein's breakdown over here.
