High School Musical 3 number one at box office

Despite projections that the kiddies that liked the movie three years ago had moved on to bigger and better things (like Tokio Hotel and the Jonas Brothers), High School Musical 3 debuted at number one at the box office this weekend with $42 million in ticket sales.

The movie’s soundtrack was in the 275,000 unit range on Friday, but is expected to have moved many more copies this weekend. It may even be in the contender for top selling album this week. Apparently appealing to tweens is the only sure-fire way to have a hit these days. [Reuters via Idolator]
