Appropriate for a band named after a nautical term that means to move the tiller over to the extreme starboard side, the music of Helms Alee veers sharply and ain't afraid of extremes. The guitar jangle is extra-pretty. The heavy is extra-heavy. The tripartite harmonies thick and hardcore heartfelt. It's a big sound for just two ladies and a gentleman to make, but anyone familiar with Harkonen, These Arms Are Snakes, Roy, Lozen and Your Enemies Friends -- all current and former projects involving members of Helms Alee -- shouldn't be too surprised by the band's indescribable shitkicking abilities. Just listen to "A Weirding Away"fromfrom the band's debut Night Terror, out August 5th on Hydra Head. The Pacific Northwest's answer to Trail of Dead? Whatever. Just listen.
