My Morning Jacket has two new cover songs to add to its already-impressive library of re-imagined material. At Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14, the band paid tribute to the late Gil Scott-Heron with a rendition of 1976’s “The Bottle” as well as Bing Crosby’s holiday classic, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” Both songs are nicely recorded and “Christmas,” in which MMJ frontman Jim James croons to you by the fire, benefits from the clarity. The Crosby cover features MMJ tourmates Band Of Horses, and the sentimental piece is accented with subtle detail. “The Bottle,” though shortened by six minutes, still retains all of its original umph. Definitely an interesting pair of songs to cover in the same night. You can listen to them here and download them here. [You Ain’t No Picasso]
