Last week, attendees of the Ecstatic Music Festival were treated to something special: Mountain Goats performed a new song cycle called Transcendental Youth, which featured heavy collaborations with Owen Pallett and a classical vocal quarter called 4 Anonymous. It seemed like it would be something only people who were there could talk about. Until now: NPR is streaming the whole thing right now. It's 90 minutes long, and while it takes a long time before John Darnielle's usual rock poetry comes in, the latter portions sound exactly like how you'd think Mountain Goats would sound with a classical quartet.
There's no word on if this will be put to a new album, but never count out anything like this when it comes to Mountain Goats albums.
