David Lynch’s previous forays into music have included work on the soundtracks to his own movies and, most famously, on the Dark Night of the Soul collaborative project with Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous. But now Lynch has taken another unique turn in a career full of impossible-to-predict twists, and has released a single titled “Good Day Today” backed with “I Know” on the U.K. label Sunday Best Recordings.
Lynch sings on the track, although the heavily treated vocals make it impossible to ascertain that it’s actually him, and the musical backing is positioned somewhere between the glitch-tronica of Crystal Castles and the rave-pop sound of Underworld. Of the recordings, Lynch says:
“I am very happy to be with Sunday Best with the songs ‘Good Day Today’ and ‘I Know’. This feels like a good partnership and I’m looking forward to everyone having a good day today. In all my films, I have always been very involved with all that one hears. The creation of this record was a natural extension of my love of sound and music.”
The single contains artwork by 4AD legend Vaughan Oliver and is available from iTunes now, with a series of remixes to follow in January.
