Has Rickrolling drawn to its natural conclusion?

Have you been Rickrolled? The bizarre internet phenomenon began when masked URLs purportedly containing video footage would instead take users to a clip of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Rickrolling quickly blossomed and found other forms--the song was used during a Scientology protest in February, and almost became the 8th inning sing-along for a New York Mets game in April.

But last night in Liverpool, during MTV’s European Music Awards, Rickrolling reached its zenith/nadir (depending on your views). Rick Astley is now officially recognized as Best Act Ever by MTV Europe after he beat out an eclectic list of nominees that included Britney Spears and Tokio Hotel. Yes, you did read that right. Rick Astley is Best Act Ever, not Tokio Hotel or the Beatles or Elvis Presley or Christina Aguilera (the latter was also nominated).

Sadly Astley couldn’t attend the ceremony. Perhaps he was busy Rickrolling himself at home? Perez Hilton picked up the award on his behalf, Britney Spears had to make do with the Best Act of 2008 award, and Astley offered the following statement: "I am honored that my fans worked so hard to help me win Best Act Ever at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. This is the first time I have been nominated for the EMAs and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me."

That's just so totally bizarre, it reads like an Internet troll. Anonymous is using Rickrolling to dismantle the notoriously criminal Scientology Corporation because the song was -- er, I mean is -- kind of rather lame, something of a freakishly bizarre antic dragged out of the 1960's or something, up here in to the light of the 24'th Century.

Xenu knows that the song itself was popular in its day, but the second wave being enjoyed due to Anonymous and the channers really doesn't rate best anything.

Is the response above mine even in English? Can someone translate?

Rick Astley holds a place of honour amongst certain groups of internet denizens and the effort made to get him voted best act ever was not done as a joke.

Granted, it wasn't his talent nor his music that gives him that place. Still, his attitude throughout this revival of his popularity goes a long way in keeping him in that position.

Sort of backhandedly beloved, as it were.
