It hasn’t been a good week for M.I.A. Her new album, / \ / \ / \ Y / \, has received less than glowing reviews, and now comes news that the one-day Hard LA festival has been canceled. M.I.A. was set to headline the event on July 17 at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, with support from Soulwax, Crystal Castles, Major Lazer, and others.
The vague “events beyond our control” excuse is being given as the reason for the cancellation, with the real story behind it presumably buried (for now). Ticket holders are advised to hold onto their tickets for the Hard Summer Festival, with refund details being made available on July 13.
Despite the problems that have beset the event on the west coast, the New York version of Hard will go ahead on July 24 on Governors Island, with M.I.A. still set as the festival’s headliner. Gary Richards, promoter of the LA incarnation of Hard, said “I’d rather not comment on that” when asked by the LA Times if slow tickets sales were an issue. Draw your own conclusions from that comment.
