Jay Edgar Hoover would have smiled at the events in Los Angeles earlier today at the home of Kevin Cogill. Cogill, a.k.a. "Skwerl," the online blogger who leaked 9 tracks off of Guns N' Roses' upcoming album Chinese Democracy back in June, was arrested at his home by the Feds this afternoon. Despite confessing to the FBI while under investigation after the leak was released, he still faces up to 3 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. And that doesn't include the civil suit from the emotional turmoil Cogill caused Axl Rose.
The stereotypical piracy arrests in recent years have been of 8-year-old girls or 50-year-old single moms who were publicly tried to set an example for similar pirates. This arrest may be an indication that the music industry is now going after direct copyright violations of heavily-anticipated releases. At least in this case we will be seeing an Axl Rose-sanctioned release of Chinese Democracy soon enough.
