Guitar Center to hold Drum-Off for 20th time

The Guitar Center has now entered its 20th year of holding nationwide Drum-Off competitions. Think of it as like a battle of the bands for just drummers. Anyone can register for the world's largest drum competition, but each store is limited to 30 contestants. For a struggling band, the prize booty is certainly not a bad haul—$25,000, plus a Roland TD-20 kit, a custom made Drum Set, and the fame and glory that comes with being a nationwide champion.

Past champions have gone on to drum for Prince, Sly and the Family Stone, and Jay-Z, so it may be more in tune with American Idol of drumming, minus the verbal abuse. The most incredible past champion, however may have been the 9-year-old who won in 1993 named Thomas Pridgen, who went on to work with some band called The Mars Volta. Finals will be held in L.A. in January, and competition formally starts in September. Better start practicing now.
