Gruff Rhys Releasing Solo Album and Movie Titled Separado!

The Super Furry Animals' Dark Days/Light Years is still fresh in the memory and already singer Gruff Rhys is heading off into another venture. Rhys has completed a film titled Separado!, which traces his family roots in Patagonia. "We're going to show the film for the first time in November and hopefully someone will help me put out a DVD for release sometime next year," he said.

There will be music from Rhys released to coincide with the film: "I also did a soundtrack for it, so that will be my next solo album by default,” he continued. The movie doesn’t yet have a distributor, but sounds like it will be worth the wait—the Guardian describes it as “a blend of magical realist road movie, personal quest and social history.”

"It was an idea that got completely out of hand," said Rhys. "When I was a kid, I used to watch this guy on television wearing a cape, riding a horse, and singing Welsh in a strange accent. I asked my grandmother who he was and she said, 'That's your uncle.' It was René Griffiths. Because of personal hardships and a horse race that went wrong, our family was divided – with René Griffiths growing up in Patagonia and my side of the family staying in Wales. I wanted to find out more."
