Grohl downgrades Metallica letter to out of context quote

Foo Fighter Dave Grohl has issued a statement addressing his “open letter” to Metallica that made the rounds of the Internet earlier this week. While Grohl doesn’t disavow the band or his fanboy status, he says that he stopped short of actually putting pen to paper and that the ‘letter’ was actually a quote taken from a larger interview. Grohl released the following statement:

“Just wanted to write a quick note to clear up this whole "Open letter to Metallica" fiasco……For the record, I never "wrote" anything to Metallica. I was asked by a journalist, at the end of a long interview (abut the Foo Fighters) to give a quick message to Metallica in the studio. So, I rattled that quote off the top of my head. No biggie, right? Somehow it became my "open letter" to the band, and now it’s been picked up by everyone from Blabbermouth to Rolling Stone (as if anyone really cares!). Now, it’s true that I’ve been a loyal fan of this band for 25 years, and I can’t wait to hear the new shit, but an "open letter" to the band?!!?? Nah. Not my style. I’d rather just text ’em……”

Though an open fan letter was not exactly expected from an alternative rock demigod, should Grohl really be worried enough to retract it? Were his feelings hurt by all the “Dave Grohl hearts Metallica 4-Ever” posts, or was he worried that Lars Ulrich would  come knocking because he called out the drum parts? Metallica has not responded to the letter or the retraction. They’re probably busy texting messages of encouragement to bands that they like. [Idolator]
