Portishead aren’t known for taking swift action in the studio, but Geoff Barrow has rectified that issue with his new band, BEAK>. Their forthcoming album was recorded in 12 days with no overdubs, and is due for release on Barrow’s Invada label in the not-too distant future.
A special box set release of the album is sure to set collectors salivating—the package will feature an additional 4-track CD, a BEAK> T-shirt, a 12-inch single, and a hand-sprayed pizza box-style casing. Pre-orders for the album are now being taken over on the Invada website.
Barrow has already previewed the BEAK> sound on this video clip, and it’s not dissimilar to some of the krautrock-meets-Silver-Apples sounds of Portishead’s Third. But BEAK> songs are more raw and improvised, with Barrow seemingly intent on revisiting the loose and hypnotic sounds of those legendary early Can recordings.
