Fugazi, Band of Horses Inspire Shepard Fairey's Williamsburg Takeover

Shepard Fairey might as well call himself the King of New York considering that the artist has virtually taken over the city with his handiwork as of late. Between completing his new mural on Houston St. (which was quickly vandalized) and launching his month-long May Day show this weekend at the Deitch Projects, Mr. Obey has also found the time to surely please hipster nation and revamp the walls of Music Hall of Williamsburg.

According to the announcement, Fairey's playlist while creating the MHoW installation included Metallica, Fugazi and Band of Horses, a rather eclectic lineup that nonetheless inspired the posters which "feature images demonstrating his disdain for the dysfunctional democracy and the need for campaign finance reform." Anyone want to take bets as to whether Repeater, ...And Justice for All or Cease to Begin played a more prevalent role in Fairey's politically charged effort? [Gothamist]

When you look up "unrepentant douchebag" in the dictionary there is a picture of Shepard Fairey. Hypocrite, plagiarist, ignoramus.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I interviewed him close to 12 years ago now, when he was living in San Diego after being kicked out of New York. This guy capitalized on business opportunities that only existed because of a his passion to fu*k with peoples perceptions. He did not start on his course because he thought there was any money it.
So now he runs one of the biggest marketing arms out there. I say good. Who would you rather have run it? Don't hate a guy for winning the lotto and then parlaying into a powerhouse opportunity.
