The search for the best Canadian album of 2009 is over, with Toronto band Fucked Up snatching the top prize. The hardcore troupe fought off stiff competition from Chad VanGaalen, Great Lake Swimmers and Metric, and the award was given to the band last night (Sept. 21) for their The Chemistry of Common Life album.
Pink Eyes and his group also picked up a cool $20,000 for their troubles, although the singer said they had some trouble entering the awards ceremony: "We got frisked on our way in and I said 'this [evening] is gonna suck’. But at least we’ll get a free iPod. Well, we won the Polaris. Its a lot better than an iPod."
Former winners of the Polaris Prize include Caribou and Final Fantasy, and a panel of judges connected to the Canadian music industry carefully selects the victor. What will Fucked Up do with this sudden windfall? Pink Eyes wasn’t saying, but at least it will pay a few medical bills if their raucous live shows veer out of control.
