In a bit of news that should surprise no one in light of the past few weeks, Frank Ocean’s major label debut, channel ORANGE, will debut at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. ORANGE sold 131,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard. The majority of sales were digital, with only 3,000 coming from physical CDs.
The album was released as an iTunes exclusive a week in advance of its scheduled July 17 date. Following its digital release, physical retailers were told to start selling the CD as soon as it arrived in stores. Target, in a much publicized spat, refused to carry ORANGE as a result of the early iTunes release.
Ocean trumped the first-week sales of Usher’s Looking 4 Myself (128,000) and comes close to Chris Brown’s Fortune (135,000).
