The Flaming Lips’ Embryonic is out this week, and has been getting largely positive reviews for its sprawling return to the band’s psychedelic roots. There may not be anything as catchy as “Do You Realize” or “Fight Test” this time out, but their saccharine pop impulses probably needed a well-deserved rest.
To celebrate the release of the album, The Flaming Lips are playing a free “secret” show in Hollywood, California, this Thursday (Oct. 15). The band will play the Ricardo Montalban Theatre, which holds just 1,200 people. The free tickets will be available from the venue and Amoeba Records.
The concert is part of the “MySpace Secret Shows” series, which really stretch the definition of the word “secret” to breaking point. The band is also setting up a special “pop-up” store on Oct. 15 in Hollywood, which will sell unique merchandise by the band. Anyone buying Embryonic at Amoeba prior to this date will get a pass to the pop-up store.
