Jay-Z may own a lot of things, but as of Thursday, the title of most of concert appearances in a 24-hour period is no longer his. The Flaming Lips took H-O-V’s Guinness World Record with eight shows in that same time period. Beginning Wednesday at 6:30 pm CT through Thursday, the post-punkers from Oklahoma put on a fast-paced bus tour, stopping in eight different cities from Memphis to New Orleans, delighting fans with quick sets in cities throughout the Mississippi Delta.
"When I was 16, this was the dream – the great inclusive adventure of touring." Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told reporters during a tour bus press conference. "Honestly, I don't think a lot of artists now would look very good doing this."
Fans had a chance to peek in on some of the shows as part of the third annual O Music Awards, which aired exclusively online. Needless to say, the shows were the most viewed digital event in the show’s history.
There were special guests aplenty. The Lips welcomed friends like Jackson Browne, Grace Potter and Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, who all hitchhiked on the tour bus in between cities.
The Lips bus was trailed by Guinness World Record officials and a horde of hardly-missed fans in costume and of course, "really good drugs,” Coyne quipped.
