Final Fantasy wins Polaris Prize

I couldn't be happier that Final Fantasy is the winner of this year's Polaris Music Prize, for his fantastic (albeit unfortunately titled) He Poos Clouds. For those who don't know, the Polaris is basically the Canadian equivalent of The Mercury Prize, which recognizes the best in Canadian music regardless of genre or sales. The winner gets recognition and exposure. Oh, and $20,000.
After the travesty that was The Arctic Monkeys winning The Mercury this year, I couldn't be prouder that my country didn't just take the obvious route and give the award to Wolf Parade or Metric. That's not a knock on either act but, like The Arctic Monkeys, neither group really needs the added exposure of the award at this point. Getting the word out on fantastic talents like Owen Pallett is exactly what this prize should be about, so kudos to the Polaris jury. Here's a list of this year's nominees (all of which are great and deserve your attention as well)
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Cadence Weapon - Breaking Kayfabe
The Deadly Snakes - Porcella
Sarah Harmer - I'm a Mountain
K'naan - The Dusty Foot Philosopher
Malajube - Trompe L'Oeil
Metric - Live It Out
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary

i still haven't heard this record, but i've heard lots of people say i should have heard this record. what's it like?

i dont know, but i inexplicably want to slap that dude in the picture.

It's baroque pop, mk. Lots of strings, very odd lyrics, and good compositions. It's very good.

you would slap link on his way to find zelda? he's got enough to worry about, dude.

He's also the string arranger for the Arcade Fire. In concert he plays all the different arrangements himself, using this loop pedal thing. It's amazing to watch.

I don't care what it sounds like. With an album name that enormously stupid, I'm not interested. Don't you all get how he's ragging on rock critics--anyone associated with the way cool Arcade Fire, whether it be this guy or Belle Orchestre, their shit couldn't possibly stink, right?

So John, essentially you're endorsing that people do the musical equivalent of judging a book by it's cover? Remind me why you write for Prefix again?

>you would slap link on his way to find zelda? he'''s got enough to worry about, dude.its not link! its like the squire from the final fantasy 1 jumpoff!!!!

wouldn't be the first time a joke's been made at my expense. i'll check it out. bell orchestre bores me. just thought i'd throw that out there.adrian: he'd be cooler if he was link...and obviously, i'm old. NES por vida!

bell orchestre chick always looks like she is gagging. rather un-fetching.

Maybe judging a book by it's cover isn't such a sin in the music world. Music should be able to stand alone on its auditory (is that even a word?) merits. But this guy is obviously trying to prop himself up on an image. I'm just sicker and sicker of bands doing that. Even ones that I like, like Sufjan.Anyhoo, I'm just throwing ideas out here. It's just free speech, right? I didn't think something I might say would provoke someone to call for my ousting from Prefix.

ummm mk, final fantasy is as old as link. read your history books!

For the record I'm not calling for your ousting, but I found it shocking that a music critic said something like "I don'''t care what it sounds like. With an album name that enormously stupid, I'''m not interested."As for this purported "image" he's trying to to use as a cruch, I don't see where you're coming from, and have to quesiton your familiarity with the artist. In what world exactly, is being skinny and contributing to an artist co-op a marketable "image"? Nevermind the fact that his latest album is a loose concept album that tries to put a modern twist on the eight schools of magic in Dungeons & Dragons. As for your inference to the supposed meaning behind the album's title, I'm not buying it. First-off, he's even expressed in many interviews that the "He" isn't him, and secondly, he's downplayed his associations to Arcade Fire in all of his press anyway.

final fantasy is not as cool as zelda, that's for sure. also, i listed to this album today, and it wasn't doing it for me. maybe i need to get familiar with the eight schools of magic. where's clinton sparks when you need him?

[...] Via: I (heart) Music I’m a few days late on this, but I thought I’d pass along that, in addition to already winning the inaugural Polaris Music Prize this year, Owen Pallett has also been named the hottest act in Canada, as voted by a selected panel of music writers, bloggers and radio hosts. I’m thrilled that Owen’s star is continuing to rise, but I have to ask: what are bands like Arcade Fire doing on the list? I can almost understand Wolf Parade and Broken Social Scene, since they were still touring in support of albums released last year, but Arcade Fire spent most of this year holed up in a Church. I’m as excited to hear the new album as the rest of you, but show some restraint people! [...]

I like the album title. Love the album. John, you are crazy to think that ANYONE could be as shallow as that.
