‘Twas a strange union of pop and anti-pop sensibilities that brought together the curious Brooklynite band Flying a few years back. As further proof of the band’s free-flowing inventiveness, 2/3 of the group has started a new project, Fertile Crescent. Comprised of Sara Magenheimer (drums and voice) and Eben Portnoy (guitar and voice), Fertile Crescent veers betwixt crumbly dance tunes and semi-improvised, percussion-free trance numbers; their first official show was a performance of wordless vocalizations from inside a hand-sewn black tent.
The first sign of the fecundity advertised in Fertile Crescent’s name: a digital single, "Backwards Beach" b/w "The Knife," released by Menlo Park Recordings on November 25th. The duo played several dates with Deerhoof in the southeast earlier this year, and now they’re criss-crossing the nation alone for a few weeks. Along the way they’ll cross musical paths with like-minded creative types Avocet (Meara O'Reilly of Feathers), Lucky Dragons, PALMS, Half-Handed Cloud, Wilderness and many others.
