Many people have let their MySpace profiles wither and die since the emergence of Facebook. But MySpace remains an important outlet for musicians, especially as Facebook is dragging its feet in getting decent music content up on the site. Now details have emerged about Facebook’s plans for a music service, which seem to be mired in difficulties and wranglings with various record labels.
Facebook executives are apparently deep in conversation with label heads in an attempt to get a music service up and running. But according to this New York Post article, it might not launch at all if Facebook can’t strike a deal with song-streaming services such as Rhapsody and iLike. Facebook has issued a non-committal statement claiming that "music sharing plays a part" in its future, but is still losing ground as MySpace Music begins to dominate the services on offer through social networking sites.
The one area that Myspace clearly is ahead of vs. Facebook is music.
