Emo played role U.K. teen's suicide, authorities surmise

A 13-year-old U.K. girl recently hanged herself, "believing her death would impress fellow followers of the 'emo' movement," the U.K. Telegraph reports. According to the article, Hannah Bond, who went by the nickname "Living Disaster" hanged herself in her bedroom right after telling her parents "I want to kill myself." Her parents dismissed the comment, but an hour later found her hanging an inch off the ground in her room.  She left a note, but the article doesn't detail what was written.  It seems the best explanation investigators have offered thus far is that emo is to blame for her death.

"She had secretly chatted to 'emo' followers online all over the world, talking about death and the glamorisation of hanging and speaking about 'the black parade' - a place where 'emos' believe they go after they die. She had even scratched her wrists in a form of self-harm often seen as a form of initiation into the popular fashion and lifestyle fad followed by young people who dress in black like their older “Goth” crowd.  On her page on Bebo, the online networking site, she told friends with names like Sam Suicide, that she was obsessed with the American band My Chemical Romance, who hit number one with their last album The Black Parade. "

The article goes on to give a typical daily newspaper exploration of the "emo movement":

"Emo, which stands for 'emotional, ' is a youth movement based around dark music, dark clothing and a dark view of the world. It was pioneered in America and emo followers adhere to a host of cult-like conventions to demonstrate dedication to this new wave of pop music and lifestyle. The emo brand of music sounds much like indie or rock, but it takes its unique name from the emotional lyrics and melancholy themes.  While most fans simply enjoy the music and dress, others take their fascination to a sinister level. They indulge in self-harming and become obsessed with death and suicide."

Remember when this was called goth and emo meant going to a Promise Ring/Texas Is the Reason double bill?

Sounds like thinning out the herd.

Way to go mom and dad for getting the message. "I'm going to kill myself tonight" Thats nice honey, now go to bed and we'll see you in the morning.

May 8, 2008 at 9:30 p.m.

Its not the music that pushed her to do this its her parents parenting. If they paid any attention to what she as saying they could have prevented this girl's death.

I should know because i listen to My Chemical Romance all the time and if anyone with brains actually paid attention to this band they would have notice that they actually hate emo, do not consider themselves emo, are against suicide and self harm and that they love everyone, they have never encouraged self harm, and they never will.

And if you have the brains to actually research this before you start typing then you should know that the parents should have paid closer attention to what their daughter was saying....It THEIR FAULT she DIED...NOT THE MUSICS!!!!!!

May 8, 2008 at 11:09 p.m.

yeah Shanca, it's the parents' fault. don't insult free will.

I hear ya Jeff. A little American Football and The Gloria Record. Maybe some Owls and Bedhead? Those were the days when bands like Death Cab and Low were called emo...probably because their lyrics had more depth and emotion than any of the emo tag-ons today.

Jeff Skruck is right: the label emo has been perverted by the media in the last decade. All of these Black Parade bands are something else entirely.

May 9, 2008 at 7:58 a.m.

i havent listneed to MCR for about 3 years now and I have never had the thought to kill my self or even self harm,
and i dont think MCR are all about getting little tennagers to kill themselves

it says that she had scrathes on her arms
so her friends and family should have seen that as a cry for help

the black parade is about a man dying of cancer so i havent a clue where people have got the idea that it is a place where you go when you die.

initiation into the emo group
and to think that these people have an education

what are we going to be seeing next
little 11 years old smoking and drinking and hurlin abuse at someone so they can 'initaite'in to the Chav grou`p?

and yeah her friends might have names with the word suicide in it but dont you think that they are only doing it to impress there friends online?!

so how come they havent blamed bebo and just MCR

May 9, 2008 at 7:58 a.m.

unfortunately reporting of this has taken a very sad time in the lives of a lovely family and used emo to cite a worldwide reaction at the lack of parenting. the parents are not blaming emo or MCR, and the media have very cleverly used one remark to spark fury. brilliant spin and great reactions - but not the truth. i knew hannah. i know her parents. a girl has taken her life, and her parents will live the rest of theirs regretting not paying more attention to what they thought was a teenage tantrum about not being allowed to stay overnight at a place they didn't know with a boyfriend at the age of 13. teenagers aren't easy and a lot of them make remarks about death - i certainly did. her mum and dad already have had to live every day since in despair that they didn't behave differently.

may she rest in peace, may those that have lost her find some in the days ahead... and may the world not persecute two loving parents who had little sign that their popular, energetic and outgoing daughter who they thought they were protecting was going to leave their worlds changed forever.

May 9, 2008 at 7:58 a.m.

Emos march the Black Parade when they die...ROFL.
I've seen a couple of kids on the bus showing each other their scars, telling each other how 'emo' they are. I don't hv anything against the music or the style, but I think some Emo kids get the point all wrong. Cutting yourself isn't cool.

The parents??? Erm...Bit daft, they are.

May 9, 2008 at 10:31 a.m.

My God. That's so.... stupid. What a martyr.

May 9, 2008 at 12:12 p.m.

this is god dam bull emos gt nout to do wit self harm or suicide

May 9, 2008 at 12:15 p.m.

This reminds me of Columbine, when the media blamed Goth and Industrial music for the impetus behind the students opening fire. It's amazing that this can still happen--the easy casting of blame on something that is probably quite unrelated to the reasons behind the act. Whether you are an emo hater or not, it's still sad that a 13 year old felt pained enough to take her own life.

May 9, 2008 at 12:35 p.m.

i listen to hiphop and not once have i ever wanted to shoot somebody or hump a girl with big butt and boobs. when i listen to professor murder, i sometimes wish i joined my high school marching band. is that what the article is talking about? i don't really get the correlation.

May 9, 2008 at 2:25 p.m.

If people are stupid enough to take bullsh*t trends to an extreme let them do what they like.

But blaming bands or implying they're the pipers to this army of idiots is just a pathetic method of blaming someone other than family and friends for lack of observation and an inability to be there for someone who clearly wasn't doing so great.

But at the end of the day a life is in the hands of the person it belongs to.

I'm not going to get myself down over some girl who was too dipsh*t to get the lyrics to the majority of MCR tracks are about LIVING your life.

This whole Emo thing is sh*te.

Get a grip people, you're bringing the entire human race down.

May 9, 2008 at 2:25 p.m.

really lala? not even the humping part?

May 9, 2008 at 2:26 p.m.

this is just stupid, the person that wrote this has oviously just written it straight off, without reaserching the wrod emo, and certainly not what my chemical romance stand for. and frank, were i ive, that is already happening, what is society coming to, i listen to mcr all the time, is my favourite time, and i dont hear death and suicide, i hear persiverance and showing who your are, wherever you are, whoever you are.

May 10, 2008 at 8:35 a.m.

Wow, talk about blaming someone from a distance. MCR music does talk about death, but not about suicide, more of a celebration of life and those who are important to us. I listen to MCR. I also think about death in the sense that I want to live a life of happiness and enjoy and be grateful for the great life I have. I will never know how and when I will die, but it won't be self inflicted.

This girl had problems large than we may know. Mental health is a fragil thing. I can't see cutting or scaring yourself as something an average teenager would do. It's someone with a lot of interal hate, conflict, and pain.

I’m a school nurse & you wouldn’t believe how many of the “emo” kids cut. They call themselves “emo,” by the way. We’ve sent at least a dozen kids to the local psychiatric hospital for self-injury and suicidal ideation just during this school year. About 90% of those kids were self identified “emo” kids. Sadly, it did not surprise me when the news broke that that 13-year-old girl killed herself in the UK. I really feel terrible for her family! I was pretty confused about the whole “emo” thing until one of the kids showed me the website http://whatisemo.bravehost.com/. Once I saw that site, I understand the issue much better now; please take the time to view this and protect yourself and your loved ones.

YOU ALREADY HAVE GROWN UP, SO YOU CAN DO THAT KIND OF S**T BY YOURSELF, BESIDES, GERARD WAY (MCR SINGER) HAS SAID THAT BEING SUICIDAL IS "BULL S**T", SO I DON'T BELIEVE THEY MADE THIS YOUNG GIRL KILL HERSELF

May 11, 2008 at 5:02 p.m.

yeah, i'm speachless, you can't force blame onto a band it's a load of bull. I've red the artical on it. And i'm still speachless 'cause it's still a load of bull to me, ad i've been there, and i'm a huge an of MCR but it was neaver because of that

"'the black parade' a place where 'emos' believe they go after they die."
Bwahahahahahaha. Alright now that I've stopped laughing I can actually comment. It seems they didn't do any good reporting on the individual(bipolar? on medication? social life?) to judge or predicate an issue of bad parenting. The article took one slightly interesting topic, be it fact or fiction, and expanded it ridiculously for wider appeal. So once again, since we don't know what all happened to make any educated social commentary:

"'the black parade' a place where 'emos' believe they go after they die."
ahahahahahahahahahahahaha

May 14, 2008 at 3:57 p.m.

No matter what everyone says, this is a truly tragic time for the family and friends of Hannah. People might have different opinions about this article, but i think we can all agree on one thing: more and more young lives are lost everyday. During my years in middle and high school, i saw lots of emo kids. It used to scare me the way they dressed...the piercing... the hair...the eardrum blasting music they listened to...i remember when i w as in 7th grade there was this girl at my lunch table...and every day before she ate her lunch she would cut or poke her finger and lick off the blood. THat really freaked me out. And i still dont fully understand the purpose of that. But as i grew up i learned not to be freaked out by the emo kids...(well maybe just a little)....but i feel really sorry for them.

May 14, 2008 at 3:57 p.m.

Being a Christian, i believe that the main reason of their behavior is because the devil took charge of the soul. You can say all you want ...i wont get upset. But this is what i believe. These poor kids REALLY need help. They are desperate for love and attention. They feel unloved, unwanted, unnoticed, unappreciated. Even-though many of them have loving and caring families and friends, the devil brainwashes them and makes them feel like shadows:unnoticed, not wanted, not loved. THey are so brainwashed they do not understand that what they are doing is wrong. So they wear the dark clothes, hurt themselves....THESE are their ways of crying out for help and love. And yet many of us turn our backs towards them....make fun of them....hate them. Instead, we should PRAY for these lost souls so they find a way out of the dark tunnel and come out into the sunshine and see that no matter how they lived their past they are HUMAN BEINGS. Like i said....u hate agree or u can hate...but what i am saying is what is on my mind...in my heart....But if atleast ONE PERSON could agree with me...and see what i am trying to say...that would be great. =) Yes, i agree that Hannah's parents should have paid more attention that night when she said she wants to kill herself. But many teens say that when they are really mad. Unfortunately, Hannah was serious. But it wasn't HER choice to kill herself....the devil had her in his control...he was controlling her....brainwashing her....making the wrong seem right. I cant say much about the bands mentioned by other people...i do not listen to them and havent even heard of most of them.

But i would like to thank the SCHOOL NURSE...the website was very helpful. (http://whatisemo.bravehost.com)

And look_a_bit_deeper...i agree with what you said...100%: "may she rest in peace, may those that have lost her find some in the days ahead... and may the world not persecute two loving parents who had little sign that their popular, energetic and outgoing daughter who they thought they were protecting was going to leave their worlds changed forever."

And to all of you that do not understand or hate....just pray....and remember that these kids are helpless because they are brainwashed....

May God be with all of you.

Oh sure.. Blame Music, BLame satan, BLAME ANYTHING BUT YOURSELF.

BLAME EVERYTHING so that you don't have to care about your kids for a minute. Sheez, what's become of parenting skills when parents obviously can't be bothered talking to their kids if their kids goes through a rough patch in their lives?

More news about the emo's victims.
Please read the article

June 6, 2008 at 2:32 a.m.

My daughter was what she called an “emo” kid. She was a bright, happy, and successful child. When she was 13, she changed. She grew darker, sullen, and withdrew from us, and her friends. She claimed that she was “emo.” She said that stood for “emotional.” He grades dropped, and she stayed in her room most of the day. This continued for months. My wife and I thought that this was just a phase that she would just “snap out of.” We were wrong. Eventually, she tried to kill herself. We were able to stop her just in time. She is now recovering and we have removed her from the emo lifestyle. As time wears on, we see more and more of our daughter. While she was in the psychiatric hospital, one of the therapists showed me the website; http://whatisemo.bravehost.com Once we saw that site, we understood what happened to our daughter. If you are a concerned parent, please visit this site and inform yourself. Do not let your child join the emo subculture! If you are a parent, and are interested, please look at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/parentsagainstemo/.

How can you call yourself a journalist when you use a BAND as scapegoat for a suicide? I am sick of the melodramatic imagery the media has pinned on the 'emo' subculture. They have created a culture that does not exist and uses it to blame the music that does follow the norm. Grow up. This girl died because she had problems of her own that were not caused by the music she listened to.

June 19, 2008 at 9:13 p.m.

wow...what is up with ya.I'm sick of hearing people using emo for discribing their kids.Or even kids discribing themselves as emo.My best friend in the whole world is classified as a prep but she cuts and she listens to "sopose it(sp)"depressing music from time to time.Is she an emo....NO.The media is treating this like its new? This happen almost a year ago but its making headlines now?Seens the begining of time people have killed themself but only 3 to 5 percent of suicide get on the news and less then 1 percent gets put on blast like this.
Did music have a play in this?Let me answer that one.....I say HELL TO THE NO.I am a fateful lisener of My Chem.Look on their website they wrote a letter sending there condulnece(sp) to the family and urge people that if they feel depressed and/or suicideal to get help imedeatly(sp).Do you believe that they want people to commite suicide?Let alone one of their fans? The lead singer Gerard Way likes to get to know his fans and treats them like one of his friends. One time he was giving an interview and he said that he saw a girl with brutal lasurations(sp)(cuts or mutalation marks)on her forearms at a My Chemical Romance concert. He felt so responsiable and guilty. He asked himself"Did I cause her to do this to herself?"I don't know but likely no because they would never promote such a thing.Gerard struggeled with depression and contemplation of suicide. His brother Micheal Way(better known as Mikey Way)struggels with a condition that closely resembels bipolar disorder.During the making of their 3 album (the black parade) Micheal brokedown many times crying and talked about killing himself or quiting the band. The other members of the band wittnessed this.If you wittnessed this would you like to have others go through the same thing you still or used to go through. No,right the same goes for this band.Under the band cover up(not really a cover up but i can't think of the word at this moment)they are normal people like you and I that go through the same issues that some of us may or may not go through.
Hannah Bond...was a tragic lost but I believe we are giving her the ultimite satifaction don't you think? We are giving her fame for what our socity(sp)looks down upon. She had an undiagnosed mental illness. But her parents didn't look at the warning signs. In my opinion they were bad parents. They didn't take the words "I feel like killing myself"seriously,my mom would had smacked me up side my head and sat me in the living room to talk to me.Not say"Don't be so silly we'll talk about it in the morning"
Hannah in my own opinion cracked under her own pressure.she was discribed as "preety, popular, and a great student"name someone who is that and not break down little by little either publicly or privetly(sp). You can't name someone right? So people think before you speak and/or type.

June 29, 2008 at 2:06 p.m.

The teenage suicide was not caused parents, if the girl did not have a computer at home she could have still used a friend ect, and i do not believe that it was caused by emo culture, as she said she commited suicide because the felt like the man raped her, not because of emo bands ect.

June 30, 2008 at 8:17 p.m.

Read and discuss more about the whole emo scene and this story over at www.soEmo.co.uk - a friendly and supportive emo community.

Sadly, the most dangerous thing about emo these days is the press coverage.

July 7, 2008 at 1:31 p.m.

When are the press going to get their facts right. All they are doing is creating panic over false information. Emo is not a cult it is an artform, these kids that take thier life are depressed and didn't recieve the help they needed. there is no initiation or grand plan to this "cult" no leaders or false messiahs because there is no cult. music is usually a release but in the wrong frame of mind can be very depressing that doesn't mean it's to blame or the way emos dress that is often also an act of independence or expression as almost every generation has experienced in some form.
The kids that have gone to far these so called cult members are more often than not kids who have spiralled into depression starting with a need to stand out from their piers or attention and getting abuse for it, then driven to an insular state of mind not helped by internet addiction where they can express themselves freely avoiding real contact. the reality is that most of these kids suffer a form of bullying from todays society that ends in tragedy. where were the friends, the family, the help!

Nobody blames mcr you dumbasses they've just said that she talked to some suicidal retardo fck that she likes mcr, that's all i'm gonna say nothin more, or maybe that i hate emo cocksuckers

July 23, 2008 at 9:57 a.m.

right im not trying to offend the parents of hannah here i just gotta say what i think.
Right here goes her father saw hannahs wrists were cut ... quite bad and he asks her whats going on she tells him oh its a fashon ... what father in his right mind say oh its a fashon that makes it ok to attempt your life go on have fun.
Hmmm thought so NON !
Then 2 weeks later she has an argument with her parents and says she wants to kill herself and what do the parents do ...NOTHING oh no wait the tell her to go to her room and say they'll talk in the morning !!! ... Knowing she has attempted her life before ... and i know it must be hard for her parents and no-one expects there child to kill themselves but come on it was staring them in the face and because they cant be bothered with their daughter oh okay go to bed now sweetie !!!

And to blame a band that HATES the thought of suicide is ridiculous ,,, they have and do say talk to someone if your suicidal, a friend a parent a teacher somone i just dont understand how the media can blame My Chemical Romance for this ... its to serious to get wrong.

i know il be hated by alot of people for putting this but if atleast one person agrees with me about my theore on the parents its worth it all. Hannah left a suicide note saying why she killed herself i doubt that will be shown to the public so i guess we will never no why ... apart from her parents who have seen the note

I agree with the above comments, you cannot possibly blame all world and Emo Subculture for the dangers. Open your eyes and try to know more about the EMO before judging it. I am active member of Scene Emo forums and communities, as well as publish Scene Emo Articles on www.littleblackcherry.co.uk believe me it's normal people wanting to be understood.

December 5, 2008 at 6:02 p.m.

man screw that. I'm so tired of people using emo as an excuse. The music doesn't make you do it, it'f free will.
