EMI, one of the most major of the major labels, is reportedly planning to launch a new music portal that will sell downloads and offer full-song streams. The site won’t be meant to displace iTunes or MySpace, instead EMI sees it as a way to do free market research into which songs of theirs are selling, and what artists fans are most interested in (you mean a site that offers the same thing as MySpace and iTunes?).
If EMI actually does launch the site, it’d be a bold move for the labels to finally get with Web 2.0 and take some of the power in promotion that sites like MySpace and iTunes have. [Paid Content]
