Eddie Vedder's belabored bellow is probably one of the most easily (and hilariously) parodied voices in all of rock; in fact, most of the bands that surfaced in Pearl Jam's wake (your Silverchairs, Creeds, Collective Souls, Nickelbacks, etc.) appear to have based their entire careers on unintentional parodies of Vedder. So I guess the best thing about "Hard Sun" is that Vedder almost gets away from his unfortunate singing style (it's still definitely Vedder, but restrained in his full "nyuuhh-haauuugh" Vedderisms). The song is an Indio cover, which makes the lyrical reference of "I am the better man!" a little stranger. Also weird is the backup vocals, by Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker. Other than decent tune selection, this is pretty forgettable stuff, and doesn't make me look forward to the Sean Penn-directed Into the Wild on which it appears with any less trepidation. Deaf Indie Elephants has got the link.

All these years I've been blaming the devil for Creed, when I should have been blaming Eddie Vedder.
