Need a new exercise routine? New study shows how to drum yourself fitter

Q. What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians? A. A drummer. Drummers may have been the butt of many jokes over the years, but this article shows that playing the instrument could reap some unlikely health benefits. Blondie drummer Clem Burke even subjected himself to a series of tests that suggested he was burning between 400-600 calories in a one-hour performance.

Dr. Marcus Smith supervised the tests over an eight-year period, concluding that some drummers could be in better shape than a lot of top athletes. Of course, backstage temptations like booze, food, and “fruit and flowers” won’t help keep you in shape, but potential purchasers of the Wii Fit might want to reconsider their fitness options.

I think it depends on what kind band your drumming for. Drummer for Rush? Yes. Meg White? Not so much.

Have you seen the Lightning Bolt DVD? Drummer Brian is crazy ripped. A counter-example, though, is Damon Che from Don Caballero: he might not play as mercilessly, but still, he should be buffter than he is.
