If you heard Drake's sophomore album, Take Care, you no doubt gave sad-sack drunk-dial anthem "Marvin's Room" plenty of spins. Hell, you probably gave it a few listens even if you didn't buy the record and just turned on the radio because that song was everywhere. And as we all know, one of the "defining" moments of the track is the voicemail sample from a woman that, until today, was anonymous.
But now that she's come forward with a lawsuit against Drizzy, we know everything we need to about her. Ericka Lee, who claims she's his ex-girlfriend and former business partner, told the Hollywood Reporter that it's her voice on "Marvin's Room" and she wants her royalties.
According to Lee, Drake offered her "2 percent of royalties," which was increased to 4-5 percent and $50,000 after she hired her own lawyer to take on the case. She wants more than that and her demands go beyond money.
Lee also said that she developed the concept of "Marvin's Room" with Drake and, as such, she wants to be labeled as a co-writer of the song. She added that they went to register the track together at the U.S. Copyright Office, but she wasn't given songwriting credit because their relationship fell apart and Cash Money said she was simply an "author for hire."
Damn. Apparently Drake's team hasn't responded but I think we can expect a pretty good-sized settlement for Lee if this is all true. [Complex]
