Dr. Dre Loses Part Of Battle With Death Row

Way back in February 2010*, it was announced that Dr. Dre was suing the recently relaunched Death Row Records, alleging that they violated copyrights held by Dre in relation to a reissued version of The Chronic. Dre claimed a couple things, namely that the album was presented in a way that suggested that Dre was involved in the reissue--he wasn't--and that he hasn't been paid royalties on the album since 1996.

A California judge ruled late last week that Dre was wrong in the first part of the suit, ruling that the album wasn't changed substantially (it just got remastered) and its original cover was intact, so Dre can't sue to copyright infringement. However, the judge ruled that Dre was allowed to continue with his royalties suit, as Dre proved that he made contracts with the original Death Row for a high royalties payout (around 18 percent in order to be let out his contract in 1996), and those might not have been honored properly.

I just think it's too bad the judge didn't make him swear in court about how he actually doesn't have any of Detox done. [Billboard]
