Downloads and Vinyl Sales Continue to Prop up Music Industry

CDs may be in an irreversible downward spiral, but there is some good news for the music industry regarding sales. Nielsen Soundscan has reported that album downloads are set to soar over the 65 million mark reached in 2008, with the current figure of 63.9 sales indicating that a new record could be set as early as next week.

Meanwhile, vinyl continues to be resurgent—vinyl sales have already beaten out the 2008 total of 1.9 million, with 2 million records already shifted this year. In terms of individual artist sales, Billboard reports that Michael Jackson has hit 11.3 million downloaded tracks this year, which breaks the record of 9.9 million set by Rihanna.

Embrace it, don't fight it. CDs are antiquated. Put them in a museum.
