Video: Dizzee Rascal "Sirens"

High society police 1, Dizzee Rascal 0.
If Wes Anderson directed an episode of The Wire and it had a musical sequence, it would look like this. And the whole sequence at the end with the girl and the bloody face is just awesome...it has all sorts of weird symbolism that could be an entire essay on its own.
Musically, I love this song too. Yes, it treads into dangerous rap/rock territory, but it stays firmly rooted in a hip-hop song structure and makes use of an awesome ride cymbal and kick drum. Dizzee rips this track to shreds with a few verses that are as nimble as they are informative. I'm surprised that Dizzee hasn't pulled out more narrative rhymes before as he is quite good at them. After a handful of good songs from the upcoming Maths and English this is the first great track.

Holy shit. This is fucking AWESOME. You are so right about the symbolism, just the idea of old world britain facing off against modern london is amazing.Actually, my favorite Dizzee song, "Jezebel," is a narrative. He's such an amazing lyricists.Has anyone listened to Boy in Da Corner recently? It's just as good, but it's amazing how normal the beats sound. It sounds like it could have come out this week. When i first heard that record, I thought my brain was going to explode. Such an influential album.

Stale would be an understatement. However, this along with Redman's "Red Gone Wild", Evidence's "The Weatherman LP", Consequence's "Don't Quit Your Day Job!" and Sean Price's "Jesus Price Supastar" have given me hope for rap music this year. It's funny, my best friend and I are only 24 and we're already diggin' in the crates to recapture the feeling that rap music once gave us. Although I like a good amount of rap from this decade (2004 was an underrated year in rap, one of the best the genre had in a LONG time...mainstream AND underground) my buddy hasn't liked hardly ANY music since the 90s ended. That's where our taste's split. Now that everyone has finally gone to sleep, I'll stop typing.
