The RIAA set out to make an example of Jammie Thomas-Rasset, and was able to do so to the tune of $1.92 million, or roughly eighty thousand dollars for each of the twenty-four songs she illegally downloaded. A district court judge in Minnesota has taken a little bit of the sting out of the judgement, however, reducing it to a grand total of $54,000, or $2,250 per song. While this fine is still probably enough to bring Thomas-Rassett close to bankruptcy, it at least exists within the realm of possibility for her to repay. No word yet on whether the RIAA plans to appeal or if Richard Marx is once again "ashamed" to be involved in the verdict. [Rolling Stone]
