Dischord enters the 21st century by opening up digital music store

Dischord Records has provided an invaluable outlet for seminal bands such as Rites of Spring, Minor Threat, and Fugazi. But Ian MacKaye’s label has dragged its heels as the download revolution gathers pace, with Dischord still mostly relying on CD and vinyl sales for its business. That's all set to change now, as the label has announced the opening of a new digital music store.

And it seems Dischord has been spending time making sure the store fits the needs of its listeners. The MP3s available to download from the store are all DRM free and have been ripped at a high (320 kpbs) bitrate. You can download 15 songs for $10 from Dischord, which seems like a reasonable deal, or you can download full albums at the punk-rock friendly price of $7. Fans of the label will also be intrigued by Dischord’s future promise of “high quality material from our archives and from users.” [Tiny Mix Tapes]

Albums at $7 is pretty cool.

Not quite the $5 Dischord use to charge for Fugazi albums, but with oil prices and the weak dollar, it may as well be.
