Diddy May Buy Soccer Club Because He Likes The Name

The soccer World Cup is coming up this summer, and it looks like Diddy has already caught the fever—he is reported to be in talks to buy the ailing English club Crystal Palace. If there was ever proof to the old adage that “a fool and his money are soon parted,” this might be it—Diddy is allegedly interested in the club because he likes their name.

“Portsmouth were mentioned but he thought Palace were a better idea,” said an unnamed source. “He could cover their debt and bankroll a return to the Premier League. He liked the name as well.” Perhaps Diddy thought they were called Cristal Palace, or maybe he even thinks he’s buying an actual Crystal Palace? Either way, he’s in for a shock if he’s never actually visited that part of South London.

Naturally, officials at Crystal Palace are frothing at the mouth over this potential deal, and Brendan Guilfoyle at the club claims he is “a big hip-hop fan” and "would willingly fly to New York to meet him to discuss a purchase.” The idea of Diddy showing up to games against Scunthorpe or Plymouth (and if you don’t know who that is, you’re better off not knowing) on a wet Wednesday evening in the middle of winter should prove to be quite a sight.

I admit that I don't know enough about soccer to really understand the context here. Is Crystal Palace the equivalent of the Nets here, or is it like buying a D-league team?

I actually don't know enough about basketball to answer that question! They're a professional team who have fallen on hard times, if that helps...

Sounds like the Nets, I guess (the team that Jay-Z owns a smidgen of, as you know).

Professional English Soccer is much different than any of the North American sports in that they have levels of Pro teams -Premier League (Highest Level),followed by - Championship Division, 1st division, 2nd division etc, that can actually play each other. Unlike here where the lower levels (i.e. Minors, College, D-League) are used as feeders to the pros.

Every year the top 5 teams get promoted to the league above and the bottom 5 teams get relegated to the league below. i.e. if youre in the bottom 5 of the Premier League then next year you have to play in the Championship league. Consequently if the following year you're in the bottom 5 of the Championship then you get relegated again to the 1st division. Obviously the biggest drawback is the amount of money/exposure etc that you get. The lower you go the worse it gets, unless ofcourse you get a wealthy owner, the team improves and you get promoted!

Crystal Palace is one of those teams that enjoyed being in the Premier League for quite some time and have now been relegated the Championship. If Diddy actually does this and succeeds he'll get a boatload of return and remember it's in English Pounds not US Dollars!

Even more reward for him if it actually works (majority of Americans who have bought English Teams have taken relatively stable clubs and turned them into serious debt loads and have abandoned their fan base - see Liverpool and Man United).

Hope that helps...

^I think a round of applause is required for the effort put in to that comment. Excellent work, DN. Just don't tell me you're a Man Utd. supporter.

Bravo, GN. Thanks for the help.

Diddy is a wacky motherfücker. But if it all worked out and CP moved back into the premiership, that would be slightly awesome.

I have literally stumbled upon this page. I'm a Palace fan! I was totally against this whole thing until I read the very good point from GN that other foreign (especially American) owners have bought great clubs and destroyed their finances but we don't have any finances so things can only get better. Having said that, if things go wrong, we will become the laughing stock of the entire footballing world.

And leave off our small corner of South London! Croydon's a lovely place once you get past all the unpleasantness. The thing is, the club is already giving away his latest album with a fan sponsorship deal thing-y. Why would a club with no money do that unless they were being bankrolled in some way?
