Destroyer "Blue Flowers / Blue Flames" (Track Review)

Dan Bejar starts his eighth Destroyer album in typically oblique fashion by conceding a strange point that we never hear made. "OK, fine, even the sky looks like wine..." he warbles over a gentle strum. Minor mysteries often pile up inside Bejar's tunes, references so insular and offhanded that any attempt to decipher them seems a fool's errand. But he has a gently joshing tone that continues to draw the listener in, even when the song's interior logic is less than inviting. "Blue flower, blue flame/ a woman by another name is not a woman," he sings cuing raised eyebrows. But then comes the qualifier, "I'll tell you what I mean by that/ maybe not in seconds flat/ maybe not today." It's a playful dodge, implying a concrete meaning but putting off the delivery of detail. Trouble in Dreams doesn't wander too far from the sound of Destroyer's Rubies--it's a bit more relaxed maybe, less epic in length and guitar bravado. Bejar's songs are rich though and if his sound is momentarily static, he's found a nice spot to rest.

Pretty song. His voice kind of grates on me though. One of those voices where you wonder if really talks like that normally.
