Def Jam exec backs Nas's album title
In a sign of solidarity from one of hip-hop's most revered labels, MTV is reporting that Def Jam exec L.A. Reid announced that both he and the label had decided to support Nas's choice of title for his upcoming album, N*gger. Reid told MTV, "We stand firmly behind and beside our artists with pride and with pleasure. Anything Nas wants to do, I completely stand beside him. Nas is prolific, he's prophetic, he's a genius, an amazing artist of respect. So, while I'm not sure exactly all that [the title] entails, I know it's smart, so I stand behind him." In other words, L.A. Reid has no problem with some very uncomfortable white rap fans.In all honesty, I'm not sure what this means for the upcoming Nas album. Given his track record over the last few releases, the odds are good that the album title will be the most interesting thing about the LP. Add to that the fact that Nas's fan base continues to dwindle release to release, and he's already facing backlash from the black community for his choice of title, and the odds are good that this album, despite its inflammatory title, will get buried in the charts and the collective consciousness by week three of its release.
